What Is Deep Hole Drilling?

Deep hole drilling refers to machining processes that produce holes with a depth-to-diameter ratio greater than roughly 10:1 — and often far beyond — where conventional twist drilling cannot maintain accuracy, straightness, or chip evacuation. The term covers several specialized methods, each selected by hole diameter, depth, material, and tolerance requirements: gun drilling, BTA (single-tube system) drilling, ejector (double-tube system) drilling, and trepanning.

Because standard drills struggle past about 5× diameter — chip evacuation and heat become unmanageable — deep hole drilling uses dedicated tooling and high-pressure coolant to clear chips continuously and keep the tool on-axis. This yields depth ratios up to 300:1, diameter tolerances of IT6–IT9, and as-drilled surface finishes down to Ra 0.4 µm, often eliminating secondary operations like reaming and honing.
